How to Fix a Slow Internet Connection on Windows

Is Your Internet Running Slow? Here’s the Fix!

Nothing is more frustrating than a slow internet connection—especially when everything else is working fine. Whether you're browsing, watching videos, or working from home, a sluggish internet connection can ruin your productivity. But don’t worry, in this post we'll help you diagnose and fix the issue step-by-step.

✅ Common Causes of Slow Internet:

  • Too many background apps using bandwidth

  • Outdated or misconfigured network drivers

  • Malware affecting network speed

  • DNS problems

  • Weak Wi-Fi signal or router misplacement

🛠️ Step-by-Step Fixes

1. Restart Your Router & PC

  • Power off your router and wait 30 seconds

  • Restart your computer

This clears network cache and resets your connection.

2. Check Task Manager for Bandwidth Usage

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager

  • Click on the Performance > Ethernet/Wi-Fi tab

  • Under the Processes tab, sort by Network

🔍 Disable any apps using a lot of data (e.g., OneDrive sync, updates).

3. Run the Network Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status

  • Click Network Troubleshooter

  • Follow on-screen steps

4. Change DNS for Faster Resolution

  • Go to:

    mathematica
Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings
  • Right-click your connection > Properties

  • Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

  • Use these DNS servers:

    • Preferred: 8.8.8.8

    • Alternate: 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS)

5. Update Network Drivers

  • Right-click Start > Device Manager

  • Expand Network adapters

  • Right-click your adapter > Update driver

6. Scan for Malware

Use a tool like:

  • Windows Defender

  • Malwarebytes (free)

Malware may consume background bandwidth.

7. Use a Wired Connection (if possible)

Wi-Fi is convenient, but Ethernet offers better speed and stability.

🚀 Final Tip: Reset Network Settings (Last Resort)

If all else fails:

  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset

  • This will remove all adapters and reset settings to default.
